DIY Flower Bicycle Basket

This summer before I went back to college, I had a vision - it was of me riding an adorable beach cruiser around my campus. I have no idea where this came from but before I knew it, I became obsessed with the idea of having a bicycle at school. I was determined to DIY the heck out of it. I had started looking for bicycles, brainstorming ideas for how to decorate it, and even made a Pinterest board. Once I ordered my bicycle, it was time to make my bastket. I am IN LOVE with the final product and wanted to share how I made it (just in case anyone else has any random visions of themselves riding bicycles). Here's how to do it!

Materials:

Bike basket

Fake flowers (I got mine from Wal-Mart)

Floral wire

Wire cutters

Hot glue gun (optional)

STEP 1:

Separate the flower tops from their wire stems. With the ones I bought, I was able to just pull them off with my hands. If you have to cut the stem, make sure to leave about an inch at the base of the flower.

STEP 2:

The base of the flower (the larger green portion that supports the pedals) is not permanently attached to the flower, so I decided to hot glue them together for support (optional).

STEP 3:

Take a piece of floral wire and thread it through the openings of the base. Make sure it is even and sturdy, because this is how it will be attached to the basket. Once it is threaded through, bend the wire so the two ends are parallel.

STEP 4:

Decide where you want to place the flowers on your basket. I chose to do one row of flowers right below the rim. Once you know where you want the flowers, slide the floral wire through the weaves in the basket.

Push the floral wire all the way through until the flower is against the basket. With the stem that is left, wedge it between a gap in the basket to sturdy the flower.

STEP 5:

Now working from the inside of the basket, twist the floral wire around one of the vertical posts. Make sure to pull the wire taut and twist 3-4 times.

STEP 6:

Using the wire cutters, clip the wire so that there is about 2 inches left.

STEP 7:

Take the remaining wire and tuck them in to the basket. I wove mine through the basket rungs to hide the edges and to help secure the flower

ALL DONE!

Repeat these steps for each flower you want to attach to the basket. When they are all attached, you may have to use additional hot glue or wire to make sure the flowers are attached securely. Attach the basket to the bike, and enjoy!

Here are some completed pictures of my basket and then my bike. I'm in love with how it turned out and have gotten compliments while riding around campus :)

I highly doubt there will be other people who have strange bicycle visions like me, but if you are one of those people, I hope this helped!

Somewhere under a palm tree,

Danielle
